Getting a Gate

Determining What You Need

You’ve put a lot of thought and research into getting the right fence for your yard. You know what material, style, and color you want to get. But have you also thought about your gate needs?

There are several different types of gates you can get for your fence. Just as you thought about your needs for fencing your yard, you will need to look at the same considerations for your gate.

Walk Gates

A walk gate, also called a walk-through gate, is the most common gate used with a fence. You may want one that matches your fence for a consistent look, or one that is more ornate and complements your style.

You will also need to think about how you will be using your gate. Will it be used by individuals to enter and exit your yard or will it need to allow for any landscaping equipment as well?

Single Walk-Through Gate

A single walk-through gate is used primarily by individuals, therefore they do not vary much in size. It is not recommended that any single gate leaf measure wider than 5' and most homeowners will match the height of their fence.

Double Drive Gate

If you would like a larger space for entering and exiting your yard, you can use a double drive gate, which is made up of two separate gate leafs. Some homeowners need the extra width for a lawnmower that won't fit through a 5' wide gate, or to provide yard access to their landscaping service.

Alarm and Security Gates

When you want to have your gate be more secure, you can upgrade the latch that you use. You have the option to add an integrated safety gate latch with an alarm or include a keyable lock.

Alarm

When you want to be alerted that someone is opening your gate without your knowledge, an integrated safety gate latch with an alarm is an ideal solution. This type of product is great to use in conjunction with self-closing hinges or around a pool. You will be alerted if someone is trying to enter your yard or pool area without your knowledge.

Keyable Lock

If you don’t need an alarm, you may wish to add a keyable lock. There are latch options that come with the capability to be padlocked or have a lock function included.

Automated Estate Gate

If you are looking to secure the driveway to your house, an automated estate gate is your best option. Since a driveway gate is one of the first things a visitor sees when coming to your home, it should reflect your style and taste. When used in conjunction with a perimeter fence, it can also ensure that traffic to and from your property is completely controlled.
