Wall System

The HLH, Inc., Tuf-Barrier™ and Silent Protector Plus™ is the maintenance free choice in sight and sound barriers. Delivering an STC-32 rating and 37, respectively – exceeding the standard STC – 20 minimum requirement for true sound barrier designation and the IDOT, WASHDOT and GDOT specifications. Silent Protector Plus™ also meets the Sound Transmission Loss (STL) specification for IDOT.

The Tuf-Barrier™ and Silent Protector Plus™ are cost effective. Material and installation costs are 1/3 to 1/2 less than the cost of pre-cast depending on quantities.

The Tuf-Barrier™ and Silent Protector Plus™ sound barrier systems meet or exceed AASHTO Guide Specifications for Construction of Sound Barrier Walls.

Harder, Luckey & Hargrave Inc. takes great pride in the processing controls and the strength and durability of our wall systems and stands behind our product line with a 30-year limited warranty on our manufactured PVC wall profiles.

Harder, Luckey & Hargrave has the capability and resources to take a project from design to completed installation. Based on customer needs we will design and engineer a complete and cost effective solution through our local engineer partners. Once a design has been completed we select an installation contractor local to the project location and provide complete product installation guidelines and support. We also provide sources local to the project location for all steel necessary for the install. We believe in supporting the local economies for each project as well as building a large base of partners throughout the country for all future projects.

Introducing the Tuf‐Barrier™ Noise Wall System –
A green product from cradle to grave.

Production:

Harder, Luckey & Hargrave Inc. manufactures our Tuf‐Barrier™ and Silent Protector Plus™ PVC noise wall using coextrusion. This method heat bonds an inner substrate layer to the outer “Cap Stock” layer.

The inner substrate we use is 100% recycled PVC from manufacturer internal recycling programs & post consumer diversion.

The outer “Cap Stock” layer of our product, making up roughly 10 to 15% of the product weight is made from new “virgin” PVC material. To maintain UV & impact performance the outer layer must be made of newly manufactured product with consistent properties.

  • Using Co‐extrusion allows us to use the maximum amount of recycled content while maintaining the strength, durability and color of the finished product. Our products never require painting.

Transportation:

The Tuf‐barrier has a surface density of 4.12 lbs/ft2 ‐ exceeding the 4.00 lb/ft2 criteria ‐ without any significant surplus mass. This translates into shipping more square footage per truck with fewer trucks needed per project. Less weight & fewer trucks means less fuel is burned getting the product to site.

  • Approximately 700 lineal feet of 15 foot high Tuf Barrier™ can be delivered to sight on a single flatbed

Installation:

Galvanized steel I-beams placed in footings serve as the posts for erecting our sound wall systems. The Tuf‐Barrier and Silent Protector come in 6” by 3 ½’ tongue and groove rails weighing between 22 - 29 lbs each. These 6” high rails are stacked one on top of the other within the I-beam channel until the desired height is reached. A typical noise wall (pre-cast) is made of large heavy 1 or 2 panels that require cranes for installation.

  • Most Tuf‐Barrier walls are installed using a minimum of heavy machinery use.

Long Life Span:

Vinyl products have field tested life spans of 40+ years and laboratory tested to 100 years. Because of this most manufacturers are able to offer lengthy warranties. Vinyl fencing materials are very strong and resilient. In fact, vinyl has five times the tensile strength of wood and four times the flexibility.

  • A life span measured in decades means longer replacement intervals & a smaller environmental footprint.

End of the line:

PVC / Vinyl products are by its nature a “rapidly renewable product”. The PVC Tuf‐Barrier rails can be removed from the wall and re‐ground into pellet form to be recycled very quickly. The pellets are put back on the market for sale and to start the cycle over again.

  • Once recycled, vinyl can be reused in such applications as packaging, pipe, siding, parking stops, floor tiles, notebook covers, traffic cones and more. A study conducted by the University of Toledo in 1989 identified nearly 100 potential applications for recycled vinyl.

In terms of a typical wall at 10’ high and 1000’ long the total project weight is roughly 41,200 lbs with a minimum of 35,000 lbs of that weight coming from recycled substrate.

Additional Features:

  • GRAFFITI RESISTANT. PVC is a graffiti resistant product allowing graffiti to be washed off with soap and water.
  • Engineered for wind loads of up to 110mph and heights up to 30’.
  • Post engineering for spans up to 12’ and spans up to 14’ with additional steel tubing in bottom and top rail.
  • FIRE RETARDANT. Slow to ignite and slow flame spread. Self extinguishing when flame source is removed.
  • MAINTENANCE FREE. Our products require no regular maintenance or painting/staining.
  • COST EFECTIVE. Our products are generally 1/3 – 1/2 less than the cost of pre-cast wall.
